Newcastle United travel to Mainz on Saturday for their fifth game of pre-season ahead of their return to Premier League action.

After winning promotion at the first attempt last season, following their relegation the campaign prior, Newcastle will hope to make a significant mark in the top-flight in 2017-18.

To that end, the club have signed five players this summer, with Jacob Murphy, Florian Lejeune, Christian Atsu, Javier Manquillo and Mikel Merino all arriving at St James' Park.

SQUADS & TEAM NEWS

Newcastle have not named an official squad for the game against Mainz, but a number of new signings could play.

Lejeune, Atsu, Murphy and Manquillo are all fit to feature, but reports suggest that Tim Krul has been told that he has no future at the club, as has striker Emmanuel Riviere, so it remains to be seen if they will make the team.

It may be too early, however, for loan signing Merino - the midfielder who was secured from Borussia Dortmund on Friday - to feature.

GAME PREVIEW

Newcastle United away 17-18

Newcastle have enjoyed a successful pre-season thus far. Kicking off with a 2-1 win over Heart of Midlothian, the Magpies were then held to a 1-1 draw by Preston North End before a resounding 4-0 win over Bradford City.

Perhaps most heartening for Newcastle fans has been Dwight Gayle's form, the striker having scored three goals in as many games before their return to England's elite division.

Mainz, though, will provide a stern test. The German club narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing 15th in the Bundesliga, but stunned pundits and fans alike with a fifth-placed finish the campaign prior.

The fixture itself is sure to be a memorable one, with Mainz promising Magpies fans a pre-match carnival, designed to celebrate the reign of Martin Schmidt, the club's former coach who led them into Europe during a successful seven-year run.

After this game Newcastle face Wolfsburg in Germany and then Hellas Verona at home, meaning they have three matches left to get into shape for the new Premier League season.

The club will host Tottenham on the opening weekend of the new campaign.
