Liverpool legend tells Arteta to 'shut up' over Arsenal transfer comments image

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has voiced strong criticism towards Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, urging him to "shut up" about the club's need for further signings.

Nicol's comments came after Arteta expressed concerns over Arsenal's current squad depth and the need for reinforcements to challenge for the Premier League title.

So far, the Gunners' transfer activity has been relatively quiet, with the permanent signing of goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford being the only major acquisition.

As the transfer window approaches its final month, Arteta has emphasized the importance of bolstering the squad in key areas to enhance their title chances against rivals Manchester City.

Arteta's concerns vs. Nicol's criticism

During Arsenal's preseason tour, Arteta stressed the need for squad improvements, stating,

"Perfection in this league requires different standards. To relate that word to winning the Premier League then that's what we have to do. We know there are certain positions that we want to improve and give the squad better resources, especially in terms of numbers where we are very short."

However, Nicol, a former FA Cup and European Cup winner, was not impressed by Arteta's candid remarks. Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol said:

"I don't want to listen to Arsenal and Arteta talking about what we need to do, 'We need to improve positions and we need a bigger squad'. I don't want to hear that at this time of the year! I want to hear some positives: 'We're going to win the title! We think we've got enough to win the title, we just have to get better, we have to take advantage whenever we get ourselves [in a good position]'."

Nicol's frustration stems from what he perceives as an overly cautious approach from Arteta. He added:

"I don't want to listen to 'We need more cover in more positions'... shut up, please! How's about you go, 'You know what? I think we can do it this year! We've got the ability and the players to win this'. That's what I want to hear. I don't want to hear excuses."

As Arsenal prepare to potentially welcome Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, the debate over the club's readiness for the upcoming season continues.

While Arteta aims to strengthen his squad, Nicol and others believe that a more positive, confident message is crucial for motivating the team and fans ahead of the new campaign.
