The pursuit of Zubimendi marks the first major transfer move of Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot. Xabi Alonso, who managed Zubimendi at Real Sociedad's reserve side, believes the midfielder is a dream player for any coach.

Alonso’s high regard for Zubimendi could play a crucial role in Liverpool’s attempt to secure the midfielder, who has a release clause of £51.7 million ($65.6m). So far, Zubimendi has turned down offers from Arsenal and Barcelona, but Liverpool hopes to change his mind.

Slot’s impressive start and transfer challenges

However, Slot acknowledges the challenge of finding new players who meet Liverpool's high standards. “It is not so easy to first find a player to meet those standards and then is he available? Then we have to find an agreement with them,” Slot said.
Adding Zubimendi to the squad could solve a key issue for Slot. During pre-season, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo have all played as holding midfielders but with mixed results. An out-and-out controlling midfielder like Zubimendi could provide the stability and technical skill that Liverpool needs.
Whether Liverpool can meet Zubimendi’s release clause and convince him to join remains to be seen. Real Sociedad have already lost key players this season, and losing Zubimendi would be a significant blow to their squad.
