Liverpool are prepared to make a definitive step in their transfer push for Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.
The Reds have highlighted the Euro 2024 winner as their No.1 midfield target in recent weeks as Arne Slot prepares to wrap up his first permanent transfer as Liverpool boss.
However, the deal has been hit by complications, with La Real prepared to hold out for his full €60m ($65.5m) release clause.
Liverpool are willing to pay the full amount, despite initial attempts to structure a deal, and reports from the The Times claim the 24-year-old will need to trigger the clause to start the sale process.

As the saga develops, with Zubimendi still undecided over leaving his boyhood club, Liverpool have reportedly informed the player they will not pursue a move beyond August 14.
Basque outlet Noticias de Gizpukoa, which has followed the talks closely, has indicated Liverpool will walk away from a deal if an agreement is not completed by that date.
In response, Real Sociedad have stepped up their attempts to keep him, with an improved contract offer including a major salary increase.
Slot wants to have clear plan on whether he can count on Zubimendi heading into Liverpool's first game of the 2024/25 Premier League season at Ipswich Town on August 17.
If Zubimendi opts to stay in San Sebastian, Liverpool will look at other options before the transfer window closes at the end of August, but it would be a major blow to Slot's strategy for the campaign ahead.
