Ilkay Gundogan is set to make a sensational return to Manchester City just a year after leaving the club for Barcelona.
The 33-year-old midfielder has agreed to rejoin the Premier League champions on a one-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months.
Gundogan, who enjoyed a highly successful seven-year spell at City from 2016 to 2023, had initially moved to Barcelona after his contract with City expired last summer.
During his time at City, he won 14 trophies, including captaining the team to their first-ever UEFA Champions League title. However, after a season in Spain, Gundogan has decided to return to the Etihad Stadium.

Gundogan writes Off Barcelona contract to rejoin City
According to reports, Gundogan handed in a transfer request to Barcelona over the weekend, citing unrest at the club. This led Barcelona to agree to a free transfer, allowing Gundogan to forgo the final two years of his contract in Catalonia.
His departure will also enable Barcelona to register their high-profile summer signing, Dani Olmo, with La Liga, as the club continues to navigate its financial difficulties.
Gundogan’s return marks Manchester City’s second signing of the summer transfer window, following the acquisition of Savinho from Troyes. The midfielder's experience and leadership will be a valuable asset as City look to build on their domestic and European success in the upcoming season.
Gundogan, who recently announced his retirement from international football, is expected to join up with his City teammates shortly as they prepare for the new campaign.
