David Pleat, who has been with Spurs' scouting department since 2010, announced on Monday morning that he will be stepping down from his role at the age of 79.

Pleat first joined the club in 1986 when he was appointed as the manager. His debut season saw him lead Spurs to a top-four finish in the First Division and also reached an FA Cup final.

He left his role a year later but returned in 1998 as the club’s first Director of Football. During his time in this position, he also took charge of the team as Caretaker Manager on three occasions; 1998, 2001, and 2003.

After finishing his tenure as Director of Football in May 2004, he rejoined the club in 2010, this time as a member of the scouting department.

His departure comes during the summer transfer window, which is perhaps not entirely ideal but the club can now look to hire ahead of the new season.

Daniel Levy, Spurs' Chairman said: "I should like to thank David for his contribution over so many years and in so many ways. He had, and continues to have, an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game and players. I know he will continue to enjoy watching our games at all levels."

Pleat also had a few words to share: "Football is my life and continues to be. Spurs has been a huge part of that.

"However the game and its methods change and it’s time for me to now step back from my scouting role.

"I look forward to watching the Club have great success in the coming years. I hope to continue my association with the game," he added.
