We've all been there before. The Fourth of July picnic is almost over and you're faced with the question of whether you should have that fourth or fifth hot dog. For competitors in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, that would be a mere snack.

The annual competition is returning to its Coney Island location in New York for yet another year, where competitors stuff their faces with dozens of hot dogs and buns in a 10-minute span.

Joey "Jaws" Chestnut won't compete this year following a ban due to his partnership with Impossible Foods. He's won 16 Mustard Belts and eight straight heading into this year. That run ends.

His most dominant performance came in 2021 when he ate 76 hot dogs — a full 33 more than the next best competitor.

Miki Sudo has won the women's division in nine of the last 10 years, with the only exception being the 2021 competition she didn't compete in after breaking the women's division record in 2020. She returned to the stage in 2022.

How many hot dogs did Joey Chestnut eat in 2023?

Chestnut ate 62 hot dogs in 2023, just one fewer than his 2022 total. It was a significant decrease from his record total in 2021, but still more than enough to clear the rest of the field.

Chestnut ate 76 hot dogs at the 2021 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, breaking the previous record of 75 set by him the year before. He has eaten 70 or more hot dogs in 10 minutes six times.

What is the prize for winning Nathan's hot dog contest?

First place in both the men's and women's division receive a $10,000 prize. A remaining $20,000 purse is divided among the runners-up in both divisions.

While the money is great, the real prestige comes in the awarding of the championship belts. The winner of the men's division receives a legendary mustard-colored, WWE-style belt, while the women's champion receives a Pepto-Bismol-colored and sponsored pink belt.
