The 2017 Kentucky Derby will be the 143rd annual Run for the Roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

The race, dubbed "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports," will be held on Saturday, May 6, and will feature a 20-hourse field competing for a $2 million winning purse.

When is the 2017 Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby is always held on the first Saturday in May. This year, it falls on May 6 and the Kentucky Oaks will run earlier that day. 

The Preakness Stakes will be two weeks after the Derby on May 20, with the Belmont Stakes three weeks after that on June 10. 

What time is the Kentucky Derby? 

Post time for the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for 6:34 p.m. ET. The actual race is scheduled to start at 6:46 p.m. and will only last about two minutes or so.

What TV channel is the Kentucky Derby on?

You can watch the Kentucky Derby on NBC's over-the-air TV broadcast. Check your local listings, or find out what channel NBC is for your cable/satellite systems here.

How to watch pre-race coverage

NBC will provide TV coverage from 2:30-7:20 p.m. ET. NBC Sports Network will broadcast Derby Access from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, May 4; the Kentucky Oaks 143 from 12-6:20 p.m. on Friday, May 5; and the Kentucky Derby Undercard from 12-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6. 

How to live stream the Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby will be streamed online this year via NBC Sports Live Extra or through the NBC Sports app. The NBC Sports app is available on the iTunes App Store, Google Play, Microsoft Windows Store, Roku Channel Store, Amazon Fire and Chromecast.

The favorite to win the 2017 Kentucky Derby is Classic Empire, but Always Dreaming and McCraken are also strong contenders.
