While track and field gets overshadowed on the American sports landscape for much of the calendar, the sport takes center stage at the Olympics.

The U.S. figures to be one of the favorites in track and field events at the 2024 Paris Games, with its roster teeming with standouts — some well-known names, others still awaiting their turn in the spotlight.

That roster isn't born but rather made, cultivated through a series of qualifying competitions to determine the best American athletes in any given Olympic cycle.

The U.S. Olympic track and field trials offers spectators the opportunity to witness each sport's finest athletes. This year's contests are no exception, returning to a familiar locale as the U.S. track and field delegation attempts to determine who should be sent to Paris.

Here's what you need to know about the site of the 2024 U.S. Olympic track and field trials, Oregon's famed Hayward Field.

Where is Hayward Field?

Located on the University of Oregon's campus, Hayward Field has been the home of the Ducks' track and field program since 1921.

Initially built to replace the decaying Kincaid Field — the football program's former home stadium — in 1919, Hayward has seen a lot of change in the century since its establishment.

In the 1920s, the field underwent a facelift, with architect Ellis F. Lawrence designing the west grandstand and a six-lane track being constructed to encircle the football field.

In 1949, a 28-row grandstand was added, expanding the stadium's capacity to 22,500 seats. As one of the nation's smaller Division I football stadiums, Hayward Field grew increasingly obsolete in a world of colosseums.

In 1967, Autzen Stadium was unveiled, offering a modern venue for Oregon's football team to play games. As a result Hayward became designated solely as a locale for track and field, undergoing additional renovations in 1975, 2004 and 2018-20.

Hayward Field capacity

Hayward Field holds a capacity of 12,650 in its current form. But that number is malleable, with alterations to the concourses allowing for up to 25,000 people to watch events at the location. The 2022 World Athletics Championships, held in Oregon, hosted some 21,065 ticketed persons during Day 3 of the July 17 sessions, the first Sunday of the championships.

How much did Hayward Field cost to build?

Hayward Field's most recent renovations cost the program $270 million in 2021, much of which was paid off by Nike and its co-founder, Phil Knight, who is also one of Oregon's athletic departments' most prominent donors.
