Olympic men's gymnastics results: Team USA earns bronze in team final, on podium for first time since 2008 image

The American men finished on the podium for the first time since 2008, winning the bronze medal in the team event after excelling on all six apparatuses. Japan claimed the gold for the second time in three games, and China came second after leading for the majority of the meet.

With multiple hit routines in each event, all five USA gymnasts contributed massively to their medal effort. Brody Malone came back from a disappointing qualifying and hit his routine on high bar, where he struggled most. Frederick Richard, Asher Hong, and Paul Juda had huge days, as well, each nailing routines on their four apparatus.

It was Stephen Nederoscik who played the hero on pommel horse, however, with the specialist coming in to compete in the team's last routine, sealing their spot on the podium.

2:04 p.m. — NEDEROSCIK HITS IT! He has done everything he can for Team USA, as have his teammates, and he nails one of the hardest routines in the field to finish out the Americans team event. The glasses go right back on and the score comes in at a MASSIVE 14.866, giving the US a fantastic chance at medaling.

2:00 p.m. — Su has fallen twice for China on high bar, putting Japan back in contention for the gold.

1:50 p.m. — Juda is up first on pommel horse, and he gives one of his cleanest routines of the day. He looked strong as ever, not faltering once while on the horse. The score comes in at 13.900, a solid number for the Illinois native.

1:46 p.m. — Juda, Malone and Nedoroscik look to seal a bronze medal on pommel horse for Team USA, their first Olympic medal since Beijing in 2008.

1:31 p.m. — Nedoroscik has emerged from the warm-up area as the pommel horse specialist gets ready for Team USA's final rotation. His routine will finish off the team event for the Americans.

1:30 p.m. — Hong is up next, and he lands with both feet out of bounds on his first pass, resulting in a 0.3-point deduction. The rest of his routine wasn't perfect, but he hit it nonetheless. Hong earned 14.133 toward Team USA's final score.

1:22 p.m. — Juda does well on his floor routine, scoring a 14.200 to keep Team USA on track.

1:21 p.m. — Juda, Hong and Frederick are up on floor for Team USA. If they hit their next six routines, its looking like a medal might be in their sights. Ukraine is in second but has yet to compete on high bar, which sports notoriously low scores.

1:12 p.m. — Malone, who had a few falls during qualifying on the high bar, doesn't disappoint in his routine this time around. He catches all of his connections and sticks the landing, scoring 14.166, the team's second score above 14 on the high bar today.

1:05 p.m. — Richard hits his horizontal bar routine with flair, performing a full twist catch and release skill that upgraded his score at the last minute. He stuck the landing as well, earning a HUGE score of 14.833.

1:00 p.m. — Juda gives Team USA a good start on high bar. He didn't quite stick the landing but there were no glaring errors aside from a hop on the dismount. He scores a 13.366 which is a decent score.

12:56 p.m. — Juda, Richard and Malone are up for Team USA on the high bar. It's the lowest scoring event of the competition, so doing well here is pivotal for their medal chances with the tail end of the meet looming.

12:20 p.m. — Hashimoto, in a huge shock, comes off the pommel horse midway through his routine for Japan. He finishes with a 13.100, not a good look for the gold-medal hopefuls.

12:16 p.m. — Hong doesn't quick stick his vault, hopping back for a 0.3 point deduction on the landing, but the start value of the skill (one of the hardest vaults in the world) was huge, giving him extra padding. He nets the highest score of the Americans with a 14.833, putting Team USA in a great spot after the second rotation.

12:12 p.m. — Next up is Malone who follows up Juda's stick with a stick of his own, giving Team USA some serious momentum heading into Hong's vault. Malone is hyped, as are his teammates. He collects a 14.533, just under Juda's score, but a huge number nonetheless.

12:08 p.m. — Juda absolutely NAILS his first vault, sticking the landing perfectly as he lets out a scream, as he should. Team USA is pumped on the sideline. He scores a massive 14.666, above his qualifying score of 14.533.

11:45 a.m. — Boheng Zhang, the favorite to win the all-around competition from China, finished his floor exercise scoring a 14.233.

11:43 a.m. — Malone, whose comeback from a gruesome leg injury in 2023 is one of the best stories of the Games, completed his rings routine with a small hop on the dismount. He scored just above Richard with a 14.166.

11:38 a.m. — Richard hits his rings routine with a stick and fist pumps to "USA" chants from the crowd. Goosebumps, for real. The Massachusetts native posts solid a 14.033 to start the meet off well.

11:37 a.m. — Richard is up first on the still rings. Malone and Hong are to follow.

11:30 a.m. — The Olympic gymnastics men's team event broadcast has begun on NBC with a very emotional montage commemorating Team USA (seriously grab your tissues).

Pre-meet updates, commentary

11:20 a.m. — There will be a different gold medalist from Tokyo this year, as the Russian Olympic Committee is not competing. China won the bronze in the team event in Rio in 2016 and in Tokyo in 2021. Japan won silver in 2021 as well as gold in 2016.

11:10 a.m. — China and Japan dominated qualifying with scores of 263.028 and 260.594 respectively. Great Britain finished third, just about four points below Japan. Ukraine (fourth) and the Team USA (fifth) were neck and neck, finishing just 0.664 points apart. China and Japan are heavy favorites for the gold and silver, but the race for third will be suspenseful as well.

10:45 a.m. — As a reminder on how scoring works in the men's team final, three athletes from each team will compete on each apparatus. All scores will be included in the final tally, and the team with the highest score wins.

Individual scores are calculated based on execution and difficulty. Execution scores start at 10.0 points, with judges deducting points for errors, such as extra steps on landings, falls, flexed feet, bent knees, etc. Difficulty scores starts at zero, and athletes earn points for composition requirements, difficulty of elements and connection value. In men's gymnastics, each routine receives points for the 10 most difficult elements.

10:15 a.m. — We are just over an hour to the start of the men's team final. USA Gymnastics announced the starting lineup for today's event with Brody Malone competing in five out of six apparatus. The American men are seeking their first Olympic medal since 2008.
