Kate Douglass career medals: USA swimmer wins first Olympic gold in 200m breaststroke image

United States swimmer Kate Douglass won her first Olympic gold medal.

The 2024 Paris Games marks Douglass' second career Olympics after representing Team USA at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

She had already collected two Olympic medals in the past — an individual one in Tokyo and a team one in Paris — but she had not finished atop the podium until Thursday.

Kate Douglass wins gold in 200m breaststroke

Douglass struck gold in the 200m breaststroke, finishing with an American Record time of 2:19.24.

She just edged out South Africa's Tatjana Smith, who finished silver with a time of 2:19.60. The Netherlands' Tes Schouten earned bronze with a time of 2:21.05.

Kate Douglass Olympic medals

Douglass now has three Olympic medals.

She collected a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley when she debuted at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and contributed to Team USA's silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2024 Paris Games.

Her American Record-breaking performance in the 200m breaststroke marks her third piece of Olympic hardware.

Douglass is only 22 years old. She was born on Nov. 17, 2001.

Where did Kate Douglass go to college?

Douglass attended the University of Virginia, where she became one of the most decorated swimmers in NCAA history. Over three NCAA Championships appearances, she collected 15 gold medals and six silver medals across individual and team events.

Her college medal collection could have been even more robust if the 2020 NCAA Championships had not been canceled due to COVID-19.
