Algerian welterweight Imane Khelif has a chance to reach the top of the Olympic world following stressful few days as she competes in the finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday.
Khelif beat Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori in the quarterfinals and Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semis to determine whether she will hold gold or silver in the 66kg division. She faces China's Liu Yang.
A win would highlight a wild journey for Khelif. A dominant victory against Angela Carini sparked a heated discussion about Khelif's participation in the tournament after failing a gender eligibility test at the World Boxing Championships last year. However, Khelif has competed in international boxing competitions for many years in the women’s category, including the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, International Boxing Association (IBA), World Championships, and IBA-sanctioned tournaments.
The International Boxing Association (IBA), which no longer governs Olympic boxing, has not released the results of the gender test or explained how it arrived at that conclusion. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has rejected the IBA's decision and made it clear that all boxers in the women's category are in compliance with eligibility rules.

Olympic boxing rules 2024
- An Olympic boxing match is scheduled for three rounds of three minutes each. Rounds are separated by one-minute breaks.
- Boxers score points by punching an opponent's head or torso. A boxer earns points for every successful hit to a target area.
- Five judges sitting ringside evaluate the fight and give the boxers scores based on a 10-point system. The winner of the round receives 10 points, while the loser of the round can receive seven to nine points based on that boxer's performance.
- A boxer can win based on point totals, but it is also possible to win via knockout (KO), disqualification (DSQ), a referee stopping the contest (RSC or RSC-I for injury) or a corner throwing in the towel (ABD).
