Caeleb Dressel is one of the most accomplished male swimmers in Olympic history. He'll have a chance to further build his legacy in 2024.
Three years ago, Dressel won five Olympic gold medals in Tokyo. He won three individual events — the 50m free, 100m free, and the 100m butterfly — and he was part of two gold-medal winning relay teams — the 4x100m free relay and 4x100m medley relay. He had previously won a pair of Olympic gold medals in the 2016 Rio Games.
Dressel has a chance to vault himself as high as second on the all-time gold-medal list of male swimmers. He currently sits at fourth with seven, trailing Michael Phelps (23), Mark Spitz (nine), and Matt Biondi (eight). But in order to win Olympic gold, he'll have to reach the Olympics in his respective events.
Dressel competed in three events at this year's game, winning a pair of them and giving himself the opportunity to race in a pair of relays.
Sporting News tracked Dressel's performances at the 2024 USA Olympic team trials. Here's a look at how he performed during his nine-day trip to Indianapolis.

How many medals has Caeleb Dressel won?
There are no gold, silver, or bronze medals at the Olympic trials, but there is added pressure to place first or second in each event to qualify for the event on the Olympic roster. Swimmers that place in the top four of the 100m freestyle will be part of the team's 4x100m freestyle relay.
Dressel won the 100m butterfly, meaning he will qualify for the race in the 4x100m medley relay in addition to the 50m free and the 4x100m free relay. He came up just short of individual placement in the 100m free.
Here's a breakdown of his performances in the 2024 Olympic trials.

50m Freestyle | 1st | 21.41 |
100m Freestyle | 3rd | 47.53 |
100m Butterfly | 1st | 50.19 |
