Inside Brazil's gymnastics team: A complete roster and more to know about 2024 Olympics team image

The USA women's gymnastics team is hard to beat in gymnastics, but several countries will take a crack at doing so during the 2024 Olympics.

Brazil is among those with the best chance of challenging the Americans in the team competition. The country has a top-tier gymnast in Rebeca Andrade, who may end up pushing Simone Biles in the all-around competition and on the vault.

It isn't just Andrade who will lead Brazil. The team has a lot of experience that should help it as it looks to outduel contenders like China and Italy to get onto the podium.

Here's what to know about Brazil's women's gymnastics team and its history at the Olympic Games.

Brazil gymnastics team at 2024 Olympics

Brazil's women's gymnastics team is comprised of five athletes, the amount afforded to all teams for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The gymnasts are as follows:

  • Rebeca Andrade
  • Jade Barbosa
  • Lorrane Oliveira
  • Flavia Saraiva
  • Julia Soares

Here's what to know about each of the gymnasts representing Brazil.

Rebeca Andrade

  • Age: 25
  • Height: 4-11

Andrade is Brazil's star, as she became the first Brazilian to medal in gymnastics at the 2021 Olympics. She earned a silver medal in the all-around and took home gold on the vault with Biles out due to a case of the twisties.

Andrade had top-10 marks on all apparatuses during qualifying at the 2024 Olympics. That included a second-place all-around finish behind only Biles.

Vault14.6832nd

Balance beam14.5003rd

Andrade is Brazil's best medal candidate and may be the only non-American gymnast who can push Biles in the vault and all-around finals. The 25-year-old's performance will be critical for Brazil as it looks to earn its first-ever Olympic medal in the team competition.

Jade Barbosa

  • Age: 33
  • Height: 4-11

Barbosa is the elder stateswoman of Brazil's team and is returning for her third Olympics. She debuted at the 2008 Beijing Olympics at 17 and has been a key part of Brazil's national team roster ever since.

Barbosa has battled injuries throughout her career, including a torn ACL, knee surgeries and a stress fracture in her shin. Her ACL injury in 2019 prevented her from qualifying for the 2021 Olympics — which were originally to be held in 2020 but were postponed during the COVID-19 pandemic — and she didn't return to all-around competition until 2023.

Barbosa was good enough to make Brazil's 2024 Olympic team and, like Andrade, participated in all four events at qualifying. Her best mark was a 12th-place finish in the floor exercises, which figures to be her top event in Paris.

Barbosa has never medaled at the Olympics. She didn't qualify for any individual event finals or the all-around final, so the team competition may represent her final chance to get onto the podium on the world's biggest stage.

Lorrane Oliveira

  • Age: 26
  • Height: 5-0

Oliveira is another veteran gymnast who has been a senior elite on Brazil's team since 2014. She was part of the country's silver medal-winning team at the 2023 World Championships and has Olympic experience on her resume from the 2016 Rio Games.

Oliveira performed on the vault and uneven bars during qualifying. She placed 69th on the vault and 38th on the bars, bringing into question how much she might contribute to Brazil's lineup during the team competition.

Still, Oliveira has enjoyed a successful career and has an eponymous skill on the floor. Her signature move is an Arabian double salto pike with a half twist, which she landed at the 2021 Doha World Cup.

Gymnastics fans won't get to see her do that at the 2024 Olympics, barring a surprise, but she may be in action on another apparatus.

Flavia Saraiva

  • Age: 24
  • Height: 4-8

Saraiva is heading to her third Olympics in 2024 and will be the team's second-most important gymnast behind Andrade.

Saraiva is a floor exercise maven who won bronze in the discipline at the 2023 World Championships. She didn't have her best qualifying run in Paris, logging a 13.166 with a 7.966 and a 0.3 penalty, but she still qualified a respectable 21st on the apparatus.

For Brazil to medal in the team competition, Saraiva will need to improve her performance in that area while performing well on the vault, where she finished 16th with a 14.100. It will be interesting to see whether she or Barbosa join Andrade in competing in all four events, or if specialist Julia Soares will knock them to alternate territory in her two events.

Julia Soares

  • Age: 18
  • Height: 5-3

Soares is both the youngest and tallest member of Brazil's Olympic team. She is participating in the Summer Games for the first time in her career and seems ready to contribute strong scores for Brazil on the beam and floor.

During qualifying, those were the only two events in which Soares participated. That said, she placed top 11 in both disciplines and made it into the beam event finals with her 13.800 score.

Beam13.8008th
Floor exercises13.50011th

If Soares can put together another strong outing in each of those disciplines, it would buoy Brazil's scores. If she can improve to top 10 on the floor, that may be enough to sneak Brazil onto the podium.

History of Brazil women's gymnastics teams in the Olympics

Brazil's women's Olympic gymnastics team has appeared in the Olympics five times in the country's history, including the 2024 Olympics. It has never earned a medal in team competition.

In fact, Andrade's two medals at the 2021 Olympics were the only medals ever won by a Brazilian gymnast at the Olympics. She and her Brazilian teammates are looking to change that at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Below is a look at the results of the Brazilian women's gymnastics team in its Olympic appearances.
