It didn't take long for the World Cup of Hockey to put a scare into NHL teams.

Marian Hossa suffered an unspecified injury — two weeks before breaking training camp with the Blackhawks — during an exhibition game between his Team Europe and Team North America in Quebec City on Thursday.  According to the Journal de Montreal, the injury was serious enough to send Hossa to a local hospital for X-rays.

Team Europe coach Ralph Krueger did not offer an update on the Slovak's condition after the game.

It wasn't clear how or when the injury occurred, but Hossa played just 10:47 before sitting out the entire third period.

Follow-up reports indicated the injury is not considered serious. Hossa had left the hospital to rejoin teammates in time for their flight to Montreal, according to ESPN.com .

The World Cup of Hockey is returning from a 12-year hiatus, with games beginning Sept. 17.

One of the biggest reasons against bringing back the Olympic-style tournament was potential injuries to star NHL players before the regular season begins.

Hossa, 37, is entering his 18th NHL season. He likely will take up his familiar spot alongside Jonathan Toews on the Blackhawks' top line.
