The Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals return to the ice Wednesday to raise a banner to the rafters and officially drop the puck on the 2018-19 season.
Hockey fans in D.C. waited 43 years for a championship, and the season opener (7:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN, fuboTV) is the final chance to celebrate before starting anew. There to witness the ring ceremony and banner unveil are the Boston Bruins, who are very much not the Penguins (lame missed opportunity, NHL).
The Capitals forward Tom Wilson, under scrutiny again from the NHL's Department of Player Safety for a questionable hit during the preseason, is likely facing suspension to begin the season. Otherwise, the Capitals team that takes the ice Wednesday is mostly the same one that finished last season, losing only two players from their Stanley Cup roster.
The same cant be said about the Bruins, who underwent significant changes to support their core following a second-round playoff exit.
