The United States put together its most complete effort at the 2023 World Junior Championship on Thursday, cruising to a 5-1 victory over Switzerland.
Jimmy Snuggerud scored twice, Logan Cooley had a goal and an assist and Cutter Gauthier dished out two assists in the win. Trey Augustine picked up his second win of the competition in goal, making 18 saves.
Snuggerud's first goal put the USA up 1-0 after one period. Back-to-back power play goals by Cooley and Snuggerud extended the lead in the second. Tyler Boucher potted his third of the tournament, also in the second, to make it 4-0. Attilio Biasca scored in the final minute of the period to put Switzerland on the board. Luke Hughes added a tally in the third.

USA vs. Switzerland live updates, highlights from 2023 World Juniors
(All times Eastern)
Final: USA 5, Switzerland 1
6:30 p.m. — The United States cruise in the third to a 5-1 victory over Switzerland. The most complete effort from the Americans so far at the World Juniors and it leapfrogs them over Switzerland in Group B.
6:26 p.m. — Boucher gets called for slashing so we'll go 4 on 4.
6:24 p.m. — Maximilian Streule gets called for roughing as he got his stick high on a USA forward. USA gets a late power play.
6:15 p.m. — GOAL! Luke Hughes takes a drop pass and snaps it over the right shoulder of Begglieri. A well-placed shot from far out, there was not a ton of traffic in front of the Swiss goalie either. 5-1 USA with under seven minutes to go.

6:14 p.m. — Easiest way to maintain a lead is to keep the puck away from your net, and the USA have done just that. They've taken a tad bit of gas off the pedal offensively, but are essentially playing keep away in the offensive zone to kill the clock.
6:12 p.m. — The period is halfway over and the United States have not allowed a single shot on goal yet in the period. Easy work today for Augustine.
6:04 p.m. — An uneventful few minutes to start. A majority of this period has been the USA just controlling possession in the Swiss zone.
5:56 p.m. — Final 20 minutes are a go from Moncton.
End of the second period: USA 4, Switzerland 1
5:37 p.m. — The United States take a three-goal lead into the final 20 minutes. The best period so far at this tournament by the USA, as they played a simple style of game. They forechecked hard and kept the puck out of their zone. The Swiss get some momentum back with the late Biasca goal.
5:35 p.m. — GOAL! The Swiss get on the board with 27.3 seconds left in the second as Attilio Biasca fires a shot right off an offensive zone draw and beats Augustine. A clean win by the Swiss and they get a bit of momentum at the end of this period.

5:30 p.m. — GOAL! A little less than 90 seconds after the USA made it 3-0, the American stake advantage of an offensive zone draw and Tyler Boucher fires home a rebound in the slot. Great read by Ryan Chesley as he shoots far pad for the rebound and it works to perfection, 4-0 USA with 1:58 left in the second.

5:27 p.m. — GOAL! Snuggerud gets his second as the USA capitalizes on the PP again. Jackson Blake's jam attempt is stopped by Begglieri, but he collects, goes around the net and finds Snuggerud for the shot. Begglieri fell on the first attempt by Blake and wasn't in position. 3-0 USA with just over three minutes left in the second.

5:24 p.m. — Miles Muller takes an extra shove at Savage on the ice, and he's going off for cross-checking. No holding call on the play that pulled Savage down, but the push at the end by Muller is what is called. USA 1 for 1 so far on the PP.
5:21 p.m. — Great stop by Augustine on a 2 on 1. He stops the initial shot, but the rebound goes right to Jabola in the slot. Augustine slides over and swallows up the second attempt. He hasn't been very busy, especially in this second period, but he's been sharp.
5:15 p.m. — A lot of time being spent in the Swiss zone. I'd still like to see more puck getting on Begglieri, as the USA has 14 over halfway through this one. You can tell a lot of these American players are looking to pass first, which ins't necessarily a bad thing.
5:10 p.m. — A scrum in the crease is stopped by an early whistle, even though the puck wasn't covered. Tyler Boucher and Rodwin Dionicio each are assessed minor penalties after getting into it after the whistle and we'll skate 4 on 4.
5:07 p.m. — GOAL! A power play goal for the USA extends the lead to two, as McGroarty makes a slick between the legs pass to Cooley on the other side of the net. Those two have been impressive so far and Cooley gets his first of the tournament. Both USA goals have been direct results of skilled passes.

5:05 p.m. — An extended shift in the Switzerland zone results in the United States drawing a tripping penalty, as Jeremy Jabola sits for two minutes. First PP for the USA.
5 p.m. — The Americans kill off the Stramel penalty. A couple of solid stops by Augustine on the PP.
4:58 p.m. — Second period is a go, Switzerland begins with a power play.
End of the first period: USA 1, Switzerland 0
4:37 p.m. — The USA takes a one-goal lead into the first intermission. A good period for the Americans and they were rewarded with the Snuggerud goal once they started getting more pucks on net. Charlie Stramel gets called for tripping at the end of the period, so the Swiss will start the second on the power play.
4:35 p.m. — GOAL! The USA get on the board first with just under two minutes left in the second. Cooley goes behind the net, but passes behind him to Jimmy Snuggerud and he beats Begglieri short side. 1-0 USA.

4:34 p.m. — Bad change by the Swiss allows Red Savage to come down from the left dot on Begglieri, but the Swiss goalie does a great job of keeping his angle. He doesn't allow much room for the USA forward to shoot and Beglieri makes the shoulder save.
4:31 p.m. — One similarity between the way Latvia, Slovakia and Switzerland have defended the U.S. — they aren't going to let the Americans use their speed to beat them in transition. All three are willing to sit back and clog the neutral zone/middle of the defensive zone. It takes away that threat of the United States beating teams off the rush.
4:28 p.m. — A seam pass from the left point to the right dot gives Logan Cooley a prime opportunity but his wrist shot his shouldered off by Beglieri. Cooley has been the USA's most consistent forward at the tournament, but hasn't had the results on the score sheet.
4:23 p.m. — The United States are doing everything right to start — except get shots on net. We're over the halfway point and the team only has three on Alessio Beglieri. Rutger McGroarty had a chance on a 2 on 1 to shoot, but elected to pass and it went right into a diving Swiss defender.
4:19 p.m. — One of the few bright spots in the Slovakia game was the play of Gavin Brindley. He has continued with his strong play today, generating a couple of chances early for the U.S.
4:14 p.m. — Not much going for the Swiss on the PP, U.S. kills off the Duke minor.
4:12 p.m. — Early PP for the Swiss as Dylan Duke gets called for tripping.
4:08 p.m. — Puck is down and the USA-Switzerland game is underway.
