The first of three medals will be decided Thursday afternoon, as the USA and Sweden meet in the 2023 World Juniors bronze-medal game.

Both teams are coming off of close semifinal losses. The United States fell to Canada, while Sweden was defeated by Czechia.

The USA grabbed an early 2-0 lead over its rivals, but the team gave up six consecutive goals en route to a 6-2 loss. The Americans were on the wrong end of two disallowed goals, as Canada successfully challenged twice for goaltender interference and wiped the USA goals off the board.

Sweden was less than a minute away from clinching its berth to the gold-medal game, but a David Jiricek goal with 38 seconds left sent the game to overtime where Jiri Kulich won it for Czechia.

The last time the USA played in the bronze-medal game was in 2018 against Czechia. The Americans won that game 9-3.

Sweden is going for its second consecutive bronze medal at the World Juniors. The Swedes defeated Czechia 3-1 at the 2022 games to earn a third-place finish at the tournament.
