NHL playoff battles
Metropolitan: Three of the NHL's top four teams reside in the Metro. Washington had the most points, Pittsburgh the second-most and Columbus the fourth-most. Washington is assured of home-ice advantage throughout as the Presidents' Trophy winner. Pittsburgh and Columbus will square off in Round 1.
Atlantic: Montreal locked up the division title early, leaving an intense race for the next two spots. Ottawa, Boston and Toronto all battled for Atlantic positioning as they tried to avoid a Round 1 matchup with Washington. Ottawa put itself in prime position to do that with a victory Thursday at Boston. The Maple Leafs had a chance to claim third place Sunday but lost to the Blue Jackets 3-2. Boston took the spot because it had more regulation and overtime wins.
East wild card: The Maple Leafs dashed the hopes of both the Lightning and Islanders on Saturday, then dashed their own hopes with the Sunday loss to Columbus. The Maple Leafs are slated to play the Capitals in the first round of the playoffs.
Pacific: The race came down to Sunday. Anaheim nailed down the division title by reaching overtime against the Kings. For good measure, the Ducks won 4-3 in OT. That froze out the Oilers, who were beating the Canucks. Edmonton settled for second place. San Jose finished in the third Pacific spot.
West wild card: Calgary and Nashville finished their seasons tied at 94 points, but Calgary will be the higher-seeded wild card because it had more regulation and overtime wins than Nashville. That means Nashville will have to play the top-seed Blackhawks in Round 1.
