Stanley Cup odds 2019: Maple Leafs new favorites after John Tavares signing image

Call it the John Tavares Bounce.

One day after signing the most sought-after unrestricted free agent in the salary-cap era, the Maple Leafs were installed as favorites to win the 2019 Stanley Cup, according to oddsmakers at Bovada. The Leafs moved from 10-1 to 7-1 odds to win their first championship since 1967, passing the Lightning, who remain at 9-1 to win the Stanley Cup.

The original odds posted last month and were updated Monday, the day after the league's free agent signing frenzy. The Islanders dropped from 60-1 to 80-1 odds after losing Tavares. The stumbling Senators plummeted from 100-1 to 150-1, worst in the league.

The defending Cup champion Capitals are 12-1 to win again, moving up from the original 14-1 odds posted by Bovada, likely getting a boost by re-signing top defenseman John Carlson and, to a lesser degree, RFAs Michal Kempny and Devante Smith-Pelly. Meanwhile, the Jets dropped from 10-1 to 14-1 with the free agent departure of center Paul Stastny.
