Just a few short months after he was selected second overall in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Andrei Svechnikov has his first NHL point.
In the first period of Carolina's Friday night game in Columbus, the Hurricanes broke into the offensive zone on a 3-on-2. The 18-year-old rookie carried the puck over the blueline and fed Jordan Martinook in the high slot for the goal.
With the assist, Svechnikov is the third-youngest player in Hurricanes franchise history to record his first NHL point at 18 years, 193 days. Jeff Skinner, who was traded over the summer to the Sabres, holds the record at 18 years, 145 days. Paul Lawless, who was 18 years and 172 days, got his first NHL point in 1982 when the club was the Hartford Whalers.
The assist also makes the Barnaul, Russia, native the fourth-youngest Russian-born player to record their first career NHL point.
In his first NHL game, Svechnikov had two missed shots in 11:48 of ice time during the Hurricanes' 2-1 overtime win over the Islanders.
