Many sports fans dream of meeting their favorite athletes. One Canadian family got the surprise of a lifetime when Sidney Crosby showed up on their doorstep.

The Penguins star and captain surprised the Pottie family in Enfield, Nova Scotia, on Friday by visiting their house unannounced to sign their jerseys.

“Well I was just shocked,” Patricia Lingley-Pottie told the Chronicle Herald . “I was just so full of joy."

Patricia was so caught off-guard that she reportedly had to sprint upstairs to change after answering the door wearing a bathing suit.

"I wasn't going to walk away, so I kind of opened the door just a crack," Patricia said.

Patricia's husband, Darryl, put up a sign outside their home three weeks ago that read, “Sid please sign my jersey.” The family hoped to lure Crosby from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, during his visit to his hometown with the Stanley Cup last month but took the sign down last week after he was a no-show.

Crosby acknowledged he saw the sign during his July visit but admitted he didn't have enough time to stop by. He made up for the lost time by chatting with Patricia and her daughter, Madisyn, for about 20 minutes before signing autographs and posing for pictures.

“He remembered,” Patricia said. "I just feel bad for my husband that he was at work.

“He’s a down-to-earth pleasant person, very genuine and polite. He was obviously interested because he asked my daughter questions about hockey and the hockey league she was with.”

As for Darryl, he isn't bitter about missing Crosby's visit.

"Absolutely not disappointing," Darryl said. "He signed my jerseys, and that's amazing."
