The Winnipeg Jets dropped their home opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs, 7-2.
In the loss, Toronto scored six straight goals — including three goals in under three minutes — leading to Jets head coach Paul Maurice pulling goaltender Steve Mason in his team debut. While the Jets defense allowed seven goals on 31 shots, it was forward Patrik Laine that felt the weight of the poor performance on Wednesday night.
"This was just embarrassing," Laine told reporters after the game. "I'm ashamed."
Laine totaled one point in the contest, an assist on Mark Scheifele's second period tally. However, he was limited for most of the game, registering two shots in just over 18 minutes of ice time. Laine's draft counterpart from a year ago, Auston Matthews, had a more productive night with a goal and two assists.

Winnipeg was scoreless in eight attempts on the powerplay, and despite managing 37 shots the Jets didn't have much luck beating Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen. Winnipeg has until Oct. 7 to figure out its mistakes before hitting the road to play the Calgary Flames.
