The Oilers did just about everything right in Game 3.
They dominated time in the offensive zone, led in total shots and for a majority of the game played mistake-free hockey. Florida, however, was too good at capitalizing on mistakes and won 4-3 in Game 3.
After the Oilers tied it at 1-1 early in the second period, Stuart Skinner mishandled the puck, which led to a Florida goal. The costly and avoidable mistake sent the Oilers into a spiral.
The Panthers tacked on two more goals within the next six minutes to give themselves a 4-1 lead entering the third period. Florida has the best team in terms of third period point differential in the regular season and playoffs, but the Oilers managed to find holes this time.
Two third period goals put the Panthers on the brink of a potential overtime game, but the Oilers couldn't convert a third, leaving Game 3 with a 3-0 series loss.
They face a difficult challenge in overcoming a 3-0 series deficit. Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs have accomplished said feat in the Stanley Cup Finals before. Edmonton can start their comeback in Game 4 on Saturday, June 15.

(All times Eastern)
Final: Panthers 4, Oilers 3
10:58 p.m.: Puck got stuck in the corner for most of the final 20 seconds before sending it the full length of the ice. Oilers couldn't tie it up and go down 3-0 in the series.
10:55 p.m.: Empty net with about a minute to play. Florida was inches away from a full-ice empty netter, but it hits the post.
10:52 p.m.: Two minutes to go, Oilers trail 4-3. Skinner needs to come out soon.
10:50 p.m.: Oh man, McLeod almost scored another to tie the game. Great save by Bobrovsky.
10:48 p.m.: GOAL! McLeod tips in Kulak's shot from the blue line as the Oilers score another. There's still 5:17 remaining as Panthers lead 4-3. There's still a real chance at this comeback.
10:45 p.m.: Edmonton just had another scare in their own zone as they hit their own goalpost trying to sweep the puck around the net. Oilers escape that trouble.
10:38 p.m.: Oilers have dominated with time in the offensive zone, but Bobrovsky has been excellent. Panthers also have been very efficient with their chances. Just 12:52 remains as Panthers lead 4-2.
10:32 p.m.: GOAL! Broberg hits one off Mikkola's arm to give the Oilers their second goal of the night. Goal counts the same, no matter how it gets past Bobrovsky.
10:24 p.m.: Florida is the best third period team in terms of goal differential in the regular and postseason. They enter tonight leading 4-1.
End of second period: Panthers 4, Oilers 1
10:02 p.m.: Oilers to go on the power play. It'll be 4-on-3 for 28 seconds, which will trickle into the third period. Great chance for Edmonton here with a lot of open ice.
9:59 p.m.: Game is going to a 4-on-4 for the remainder of the period.
9:53 p.m.: Skinner hasn't particularly been bad all game, but this second period stretch has been atrocious. Feels like any shot is going to find net.
9:51 p.m.: GOAL! This is quickly getting disastrous for Edmonton. Barkov nets a 2-on-1 goal to put the Panthers up 4-1 with under five to play.
9:46 p.m.: GOAL! Bennett taps the top of the net to put the Panthers up 3-1 with 6:03 to play in the second period. Florida has capitalized big time on Edmonton's mistakes.
9:43 p.m.: Oilers have played a great game so far aside from a few mistakes. Skinner's play was costly, giving the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
9:40 p.m.: GOAL! Tarasenko scored an easy one-timer in front of the net after Skinner mishandled the puck behind the net. Panthers lead 2-1 with 10:48 to play.
9:38 p.m.: Oh come on, Bobrovsky. He saves Hyman's shot on the breakaway and then saves an immediate rebound opportunity. Oilers have 20 shots on goal with 11:16 to play in the second period — they had 19 total in Game 2.
9:32 p.m.: Another excellent chance for the Oilers with a tipped shot leaving the puck loose in front. Bobrovsky is able to cover it up.
9:30 p.m.: Oilers are getting good opportunities, but some shots are just directly at Bobrovsky's chest.
9:24 p.m.: GOAL! Warren Foegele beats Bobrovsky low to tie the game at 1-1 within two minutes of the second period. Oilers finally break through on a breakaway.
9:22 p.m.: Back to full strength, 5-on-5 play.
End of first period: Panthers 1, Oilers 0
9:01 p.m.: GOAL! Reinhart tips in the first goal of the game off Forsling's pass. Panthers lead 1-0 with a minute to play in the period. Still 4-on-4.
8:59 p.m.: Bobrovsky makes yet another great save, swallowing Ceci's shot. Game is going to 4-on-4 after a post-whistle scrum.
8:56 p.m.: Bobrovsky is just a brick wall. McDavid still can't find the net and another power play is wasted.
8:52 p.m.: Oilers back on the power play with 5:14 to play in the first period. Slashing, two minutes.
8:51 p.m.: Shots have been much more even tonight compared to Game 2. Oilers had the early Game 2 lead but trailed on shots, which caught up to them late.
8:45 p.m.: McDavid is looking for his shot much more often tonight, but Panthers kill the penalty. They've killed the last 40 of 42 chances.
8:44 p.m.: Wow, Bobrovsky makes a nice save on the Draisaitl one-timer.
8:41 p.m.: Oilers are heading to the power play via a delay of game penalty. Great chance for Edmonton.
