NHL Draft 2019: Rangers select Finnish winger Kaapo Kakko No. 2 overall image

The Rangers knew they were going to get a good player at No. 2 no matter who the Devils selected ahead of them.

And they got a stud winger in Kaapo Kakko after the Devils took United States National Team Development Program player Jack Hughes at No. 1.

There was a debate as to whether Kakko had actually passed up Hughes as the top prospect in the draft as the winger had a wonderful second half of the season and scored five goals in his first two games at the IIHF World Championships in May.

But teams value centers highly and that seems to be the ultimate reason why Hughes went as the top pick and Kakko fell to No. 2.

Kakko, however, is probably more NHL ready than Hughes simply because he's a more physical player at 6-foot-2 and 194 pounds. He is a pure scorer who totaled the third-best scoring season by an under-18 player in Liiga history — the top professional hockey league in Finland.

New York has had a great few weeks and could be getting better still in this draft.

The Rangers traded for Jacob Trouba and Adam Fox and picked up a couple of picks at the trade deadline as well.

They are now positioned to make some moves next season and who knows, maybe they get even better by signing Artemi Panarin. It might be a long shot, but at this point, New York fans have hope, so why not pray for something else good to happen in the next few weeks.

Things are starting to work out well for this franchise.
