If no other teams claims either player by noon on Tuesday afternoon, then the Rangers will be free to send the two veterans down to the the organization's AHL affiliate in Hartford.
So far this season, Biron has allowed nine goals on 38 shots in just two games. Not all of those goals were Biron's fault, but when you are carrying a .763 save percentage and 7.61 goals against average it is tough to remain part of an NHL roster.
Asham meanwhile has no points and is a minus-3 with 14 penalty minutes in only three games. The Rangers are the 35 year-old journeymans' sixth team, and he could be facing the end of his road in the NHL.
New York also has cause for concern at the top end of their lineup. The blueshirts' placed winger Rick Nash on IR with concussion like symptoms. Nash recieved that concussion after sustaining a cheap elbow to the head from Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart. After he missed practice on Monday, there is currently no timetable set for his return.
With winger Carl Haeglin also out, head coach Alan Vigneault addressed the current state of the team with the media.
"These are hockey decisions that our players understand," Vigneault said. "Right now, with Martin and Arron, we just felt it was the right thing for our team to do. With Rick Nash and [Carl] Hagelin not being there we wanted to probably bring in a little bit more skill on our team and those are the things we're going to discuss [Monday]."
