Goaltending has been a constant topic the entire season for the Maple Leafs.

Toronto completely overhauled its personnel in net this offseason, saying goodbye to Jack Campbell and Petr Mrazek while bringing in Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov.

The tactic worked in the regular season, as the Maple Leafs finished with a team goals-against average of 2.67, ranking as the sixth-best in the league. Samsonov took over as the starter with Murray dealing with injuries, helping Toronto to a second-place finish in the Atlantic Division.

Ilya Samsonov has been solid enough so far in the 2023 NHL playoffs, however, the Russian goaltender left Game 3 in the Maple Leafs' second-round series against the Panthers with an injury.

Here is how the Maple Leafs goaltending depth chart looks for the playoffs.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending depth chart

1. Ilya Samsonov

While Samsonov and Murray entered the season likely to split duties as the starter, Samsonov has not only been the better goalie, but the healthier one. He played in 42 games for Toronto during the regular season, finishing the season with a 2.33 GAA (fifth in the NHL) and a .919 SV% (tied for sixth in the NHL).

2. Joseph Woll

Woll saw the least amount of action in the regular season out of the four Toronto goaltenders, but he is the backup to Samsonov for the start of the playoffs. The Boston College product made seven starts this season, going 6-1-0 in those games. He ended the regular season with a 2.16 GAA and a .932 SV%.

He's seen action in just one playoff game. Woll played the third period of the Leaf's Game 1 loss to the Lightning in the first round. He made four saves on five shots faced.

3. Matt Murray

Coming back from an injury, Murray is the third goalie on the Maple Leafs depth chart. The two-time Stanley Cup champion made 26 starts during the regular season, compiling a record of 14-8-2 with a GAA of 3.01 and a save percentage of .903.

He recently practiced for the first time since he was diagnosed with a head injury.

4. Erik Kallgren

Kallgren was called up to Toronto at the start of the playoffs due to the injury to Murray, but since was sent back to the AHL. He made 10 appearances and nine starts for the Maple Leafs this season, but all of that action came in October and November when both Murray and Samsonov were sidelined.

The Swedish netminder went 3-2-4 in his limited time with Toronto this year. He posted a 2.67 GAA and .898 save percentage in those games. While he was the No. 3 in the crease to start the year, Woll has since surpassed Kallgren on the depth chart.
