Kris Letang got his one-game suspension.
The NHL announced the decision on Tuesday afternoon. Letang, the Penguins' best defenseman, will miss Game 4 of their series against Washington on Wednesday.
MORE: The series has gone off the rails
The main issue with the hit: It was late with significant head contact. The league said it was not charging, and that Letang did not leap into it.
Washington defenseman Brooks Orpik was suspended three games for a more delayed hit that likely concussed Olli Maatta.
Letang may well be Pittsburgh's least replaceable player; he's a legitimate Norris Trophy candidate, and Pittsburgh was 2-8-1 without him in the regular season.
Justin Schultz will likely dress in his place for Game 4, leaving the Penguins with a top six of Brian Dumoulin, Trevor Daley, Ian Cole, Derrick Pouliot, Ben Lovejoy and Schultz.
