Laraque is a candidate in Canada's upcoming parliamentary election. He confirmed the charges to The Canadian Press. According to Canada's French-language sports network RDS, Quebec's director of criminal and penal prosecutions has recommended charges following an investigation by Longueuil municipal police, the CP said.
A Nov. 19 court date will find Laraque answering to the charges.
Canadian law enforcement officials raided Laraque's home earlier this year seeking documents related to the Super-Glide synthetic ice venture. Laraque sold the product in Canada.
Laraque confirmed to the CP that the criminal charges are related to two transactions worth a total of $120,000. He said the accusations stem from a dispute with engineer Marc Filion, who co-founded the company with him in 2009.
Despite the allegations, Laraque said he still has support of the Green party in his bid to become its second member of Parliament. He also is considering a defamation suit.
Now 36, Laraque played for four NHL teams between 1997 and 2010. He began his career with the Edmonton Oilers, who made him their second-round pick, 31st overall, in 1995. In 695 games he had 53 goals, 100 points and 1,126 penalty minutes.
