When was the last time Czechia won World Juniors gold? Medals and past results for country at tournament image

For the first time in over 20 years, Czechia is playing for gold at the World Juniors.

The Czechs punched their ticket to the 2023 championship game with a 2-1 overtime win over Sweden. After David Jiricek tied the game with just 38 seconds left in the third, Jiri Kulich found the back of the net in the extra frame to send Czechia to the final.

It marks the first World Juniors gold-medal appearance for the country since 2001.

Czechia has not won a World Juniors medal since 2005, but the country is guaranteed, at minimum, a silver medal at the 2023 tournament. It will face Canada in the gold-medal game on Thursday night.

Here is a look at Czechia's history at the World Juniors and the last time the country won gold.

When was the last time Czechia won World Juniors gold?

It has been over 20 years since Czechia has won a gold medal at the World Juniors.

Czechia last won the IIHF U20 championship in 2001, where the team defeated Finland 2-1 in Moscow. It was the team's second title at the tournament, having won it just the year prior.

When was the last time Czechia played in the World Juniors gold-medal game?

Czechia has not been back to the gold-medal game since winning it all in 2001.

While it has appeared in a bronze-medal game since its championship win, Czechia has not played in a final in over 20 years.

Czechia World Juniors medal table

Czechia has earned three medals at the World Juniors — two golds and a bronze.

The team won back-to-back golds in 2000 and 2001, beating Russia in the first year before taking down Finland the next.

Four years later, the country earned a bronze medal at the 2005 tournament by defeating the USA for the medal.

Technically, the country does have additional medals. Back when the Czech Republic was a part of Czechoslovakia, the team won 11 medals. While the country did not win a gold, Czechoslovakia won five silver medals and six bronzes.
