Canada is on the verge of playing for a gold medal.

There are only four teams remaining in contention at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, setting up two semifinal matchups on Saturday. Canada is playing in the second semi, as it has a date with Switzerland.

The Canadians, who are looking to defend their gold medal from the 2023 tournament, advanced with a 6-3 win over Slovakia in the quarterfinals. Twelve different members of the maple leaf recorded a point, with Lightning center Nick Paul leading the way with two goals and an assist.

The Swiss earned a spot in the semifinal with a 3-1 victory over Germany on Thursday. Christoph Bertschy potted two goals and Devils captain Nico Hischier had the other to give Switzerland the win.

Canada is aiming to make it five consecutive IIHF World Championships reaching the final, picking up two golds and two silvers at the last four events. Meanwhile, Switzerland has not played for a gold medal at the tournament since 2018, when the team fell to Sweden in the championship. That also was the last year in which Canada was not playing in the title game.

The winner of the Canada-Switzerland faces the victor of the Sweden-Czechia semifinal in the gold medal game on Sunday. The losers of the two semifinals will play for bronze.
