The 2022 Women's World Championship is onto the playoffs, as the quarterfinals begin Thursday. Canada is among the eight teams to advance from the preliminary round, as the reigning gold medalists will take on Sweden.

Canada finished second in Group A, winning its first three games against Switzerland, Finland and Japan by a combined score of 17-2 before falling to the USA to end group play. It marked the first time Canada had lost at a major event since the 2019 Women's Worlds.

Leading the way for the Canadians has been Sarah Fillier, as the 22-year-old leads the team in points with seven, which is tied for the third-most at the tournament. Her four goals also rank first on the team and are tied for first among all skaters.

Sweden was the beneficiary of Russia's ban by the IIHF, taking the open spot at the top tournament. The team had previously been relegated to Division IA in 2019 — the first time ever for the country — but never played at that level because of COVID-19 canceling the 2020 and 2021 events.

The Swedes have taken advantage, not only avoiding relegation to stay at the top level but finishing second in Group B. Sweden collected an opening win over Hungary before coming out on top in back-to-back shootouts against Germany and Hungary. In its final prelim game, Sweden lost to Czechia to settle for the second spot in the group.

Hanna Olsson has paced the offense for the group. Her four goals are tied with Fillier and Czechia's Natalie Mlynkova for the tournament lead. Meanwhile, Mila Jungaker is tied in points with Olsson with five.

The winner of the game advances to the semifinals, while the loser will have to play in placement games to determine the final standings of the tournament.
