The knockout stage at the 2023 World Juniors begins today with four quarterfinals on deck. The final one of the day is a matchup between Canada and Slovakia.
After losing to Czechia in its opener, Canada secured three straight victories to close out group play and earn the No. 2 seed in Group A. The defending champs finished behind Czechia in the standings, but a New Year's Eve win over Sweden leapfrogged the team into second.
Pacing the way has been Connor Bedard, the 2023 draft sensation who is making all sort of history at the tournament. So far, the 17-year-old has tied the Canadian World Juniors record for career goals, career points and points at a single tournament. He is first among all skaters in goals (six), assists (12) and points (18).

Slovakia is looking to play spoiler yet agin, having already delivered an upset to the USA in group play. The Slovaks finished third in Group B, beating the United States and Latvia, but falling to Finland and Switzerland.
Peter Repcik and 2022 first-rounder Filip Mesar are leading the Slovak offense. Each have five points entering the knockout stage.
