A day after dealing Matt Murray to the Maple Leafs, the Ottawa Senators got themselves a new netminder.

The Sens acquired goaltender Cam Talbot from the Wild. In exchange, the Wild received backup Filip Gustavsson.

Talbot, 34, enjoyed a fairly strong season in Minnesota last season, giving up 2.76 goals per game while owning a .911 save percentage. Those numbers far exceeded what Murray was able to do with Ottawa.

The move seems to indicate the Sens still intends to contend for a playoff spot in 2023.

Here are the details of Tuesday's deal:

Cam Talbot trade details

  • Senators receive: Cam Talbot
  • Wild receive: Filip Gustavsson

The Cam Talbot trade is a one-for-one deal. The Sens receive Talbot from Minnesota, while the Wild get Filip Gustavsson from Ottawa.

Gustavsson, 24, played 18 games for the Senators in 2021-22. He put together a 16-5-12 record, giving up 3.55 goals per game with a save percentage of .892. The Swede had a little more success in the shortened 2020-21 campaign, winning five of his seven starts with a 2.16 goals against average and .933 save percentage.

Cam Talbot stats

Talbot did what he has tended to do for much of his NHL career in 2021-22: Be reliable.

The nine-year veteran was tenth in the league in victories and was a pivotal cog in getting the youthful Wild to the postseason.

Talbot is a goaltender who has received Vezina Trophy votes on multiple occasions (including back in 2014-15 and back in 2016-17). He received an All-Star Game nod in 2022 and has generally existed as an above average goalie dung his tenure in between the sticks.

According to Sens general manager Pierre Dorion, Talbot doesn't come to Ottawa as a guaranteed starter. Rather, he'll share the role with Anton Forsberg, who was good in limited game time last year.

"Cam is experienced and provides us with greater goaltending stability heading into next season," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion.

He was instrumental in helping Minnesota reach the playoffs in each of his two seasons with the Wild. The tandem of he and Anton Forsberg sets us up nicely for the upcoming year.
