The Avalanche, fresh off a 2022 Stanley Cup win, begin their quest to repeat as champions tonight, as the depending Cup winners host the Blackhawks on Wednesday as a part of TNT's doubleheader.
Colorado is once again seen as a favorite to win hockey's most coveted trophy. While the club lose Darcy Kuemper, Andre Burakovsky and Nazem Kadri in free agency, the Avs re-signed Valeri Nichushkin, Josh Manson and Arturri Lehkonen, in addition to acquiring Alexandar Georgiev from the Rangers to replace Kuemper in net.
With a core of Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Co., the Avalanche are one of the betting favorites in the preseason to win their division and conference. For the Blackhawks, it's the exact opposite.
Dark days are ahead in Chicago, as the team begins its first season of play while committing to a rebuild. GM Kyle Davidson traded Alex DeBrincat and Kirby Dach in the offseason, giving away two young pieces in order to obtain draft picks. With Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in the final year of their contracts, it feels more like "when", not "if", they are traded at some point.
Colorado will be raising its Cup banner at Ball Arena tonight before the game. The action starts tonight at 9:30 p.m. in Denver, Colo.
