The Hurricanes already lost one top winger for the season and now are down another
Carolina announced on Tuesday that forward Andrei Svechnikov is out for the season as he requires season-ending surgery.
Svechnikov has been one of the top contributors to the Hurricanes since arriving in Carolina five years ago. With the All-Star forward set miss extensive time, it's another brutal blow to the Hurricanes, who are already without Max Pacioretty's services for the remainder of the season.
While the Hurricanes have been one of the top teams in the East all season long, the club is currently in a battle with the Devils for first place in the Metropolitan Division. Both teams have 94 points as of March 14.

What is Andrei Svechnikov's injury?
Svechnikov was injured during the Hurricanes' 4-0 loss to the Golden Knights on March 11.
He finished the game and it was not known that Svechnikov was injured until it was announced that he would not be available for the team's game the next day against the Devils.
While the team is calling it a knee injury, Sportnet's Elliotte Friedman reported that the concern is a torn ACL.
Hearing Carolina is waiting for a second opinion on Andrei Svechnikov’s injury. There’s concern it’s a torn ACL, which could end his season — but the player and the Hurricanes are, understandably, waiting until all options exhausted. Hoping for the best.

"After further consultation with global experts in this field, it has been determined that the best course of action for Andrei's future is to have this surgery, and to have it done by our team orthopedist, Dr. Marty Isbell," Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said in the team's statement. "We're confident that Andrei will make a full recovery."
The surgery is set for Thursday, March 16.
