Erik Karlsson makes his San Jose Sharks debut Wednesday against the Anaheim Ducks as part of the NHL's 2018-19 season-opening night lineup.

The blockbuster trade that sent Karlsson, one of the league's preeminent superstars, from Ottawa to San Jose on the eve of training camp couldn't have come at a better time, adding intrigue to NBCSN's programming to follow the Capitals' Stanley Cup banner raising ceremony.

A Cup, after all, is the only prize the Sharks are after this season after adding to what already was one of the NHL's most dynamic defense groupings.

Anaheim, meanwhile, was dealt a blow to its championship hopes with Corey Perry expected to miss most of the season after undergoing preseason knee surgery. The Sharks swept their Pacific Division rivals in the first round of the playoffs a year ago.
