From the sounds of it, former Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell is off to a rough start in Seattle.
The Commanders moved Howell to the Seahawks in March, netting the team a third-rounder and fifth-rounder in the same class they selected second-overall pick Jayen Daniels.
At the time, it seemed like Howell might have a chance to push Seahawks starter Geno Smith, at least considering some of the upside-minded flashes he’d shown while directing the Commanders offense during a rebuild—and given what the Seahawks paid.
But early reporting from Gregg Bell of The News Tribune very much says otherwise:
“Sam Howell is three days into an almost alarmingly inaccurate camp. So far, days before the team puts on full pads, the Washington Commanders’ starter last season is closer to competing with third QB P.J. Walker to be Smith’s backup than he is for any of Smith’s playing time this year.”
This will register as disappointing for Commanders fans who enjoyed the brief Howell era and wanted to see how he might do elsewhere.
Luckily for the former fifth-round pick from the 2022 class, though, it’s early in camp, and Howell has plenty of time to turn things around and at least secure that No. 2 spot.
