It isn't often that a first-round pick from as recently as 2021 is already a healthy scratch with his team—but the Washington Commanders just made it happen.
During Washington’s 21-18 win over the New York Giants in Week 2, former first-rounder Jamin Davis was inactive.
After the game, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn explained it away as a positional issue, saying that they needed to free up space to get rookie interior defender Johnny Newton snaps on a pitch count, according to NBC Sports’ JP Finlay. Quinn also cited the sheer gameplan strategy for that particular opponent as part of the reasoning.
Still.
The Commanders have just two sacks through as many games, both belonging to Clelin Ferrell. So far, the rest of the pass-rush has been nonexistent.
And while it’s true that Davis is making the transition from linebacker to edge rusher and was actually something of a trade or even cut candidate this summer, one would think the team would find a handful of snaps to let him get after opposing passers.
Instead, the Commanders elevated veteran Carlos Watkins off the practice squad and continue to keep seventh-round rookie Javontae Jean-Baptiste active.
At this point, the fact the Commanders don’t even seem interested in getting Davis reps and letting him potentially showcase himself for trades seems to say it all.
