Yet another former Ron Rivera draft pick is on the roster bubble at Washington Commanders training camp.
This time, though, it’s a little more notable. Despite his first-round status from just a few seasons ago, pass-rusher Jamin Davis currently faces an uncertain future with final cuts approaching.
The Athletic’s Ben Standig recently summed up the outlook:
“Jamin Davis, a 2021 first-round pick, faces an uphill battle based on his initial camp struggles as an edge rusher. Coaches haven’t abandoned the notion of keeping Davis at linebacker. Impressing on special teams would significantly improve his chances.”
The Commanders raised some eyebrows earlier this week by cutting receiver Dax Milne, making the former seventh-rounder the first Rivera draftee cut by new head coach Dan Quinn.
Davis is quite a bit more notable, though. The 19th pick in 2021, the Commanders have tried the former Kentucky standout on the edge this summer to so-so results. This, after he’s tallied just five sacks and 18 pressures over three seasons despite playing 85 percent or more of the defensive snaps in each of the last two seasons.
The fact there is a position change and chatter about special teams says it all, as Davis is now one of the most notable Rivera-era picks on the roster bubble in Washington.
