The Washington Commanders might have a hit on their hands with second-round rookie Ben Sinnott.
Sinnott, the 53rd pick this year out of Kansas State, always looked like an intriguing weapon, albeit one who might need time to develop. That was especially the case after starting third on the depth chart behind Zach Erz and John Bates in camp.
Or not.
Sinnott didn’t need long to make an impact during the team’s preseason opener against the New York Jets. He wound up leading the entire team in receiving, turning his trio of targets into as many catches and 57 yards.
On one of those catches, he rumbled for 44 yards down the field before finally being dragged down by multiple defenders.
Sinnott wound up proving head coach Dan Quinn right, who earlier this week said the following about the rookie’s game: "I've been impressed by Ben. I thought he would be excellent in the run game. I thought that would be one of his marks that he would really hit and be good in that spot, and he has been. What I've been most impressed by is his ability on some contested catches.”
While it’s only the preseason, some performances are too difficult to ignore as potential depth chart shakeups. Plus, tight end is far too important for a developing rookie passer like Jayden Daniels, so Sinnott should be getting plenty of looks in the coming weeks to prove he deserves what feels like an obvious rise up the depth chart.
