The Washington Commanders are arguably the most pleasant surprise of the 2024 season thus far. Not only is head coach Dan Quinn's squad 4-2, but they have an incredibly impressive rookie quarterback in Jayden Daniels.
Through six games, Daniels has been everything the Commanders could have hoped for, and then some. Not only is he putting up big numbers, he passes the eye test, too. And, with Daniels emerging so quickly, the Commanders are now in a position to compete for big things much sooner than expected.
But before they can do that, the Commanders have to bolster the rest of the roster, and that goes for both sides of the ball. Washington now must address the interior of its defensive line after the season-ending injury to Jonathan Allen.
Another area where the Commanders should look to improve would directly benefit Daniels, and that's at wide receiver, where the team only has one truly proven option in Terry McLaurin.
As such, Bleacher Report's Scouting Department is urging the Commanders to call up the Cleveland Browns to strike a deal for wide receiver Amari Cooper.
While the Commanders' offense has been humming for the majority of the season so far, the front office might want to explore adding one more receiver before the trade deadline. Cooper recently appeared as the No. 4 overall player on B/R's NFL Trade Block Big Board and was named a good pickup for the team.
"Washington is building an exciting offense around rookie sensation Jayden Daniels," B/R's Kristopher Knox wrote. "Part of the plan has involved surrounding the quarterback with seasoned veterans like Austin Ekeler and Zach Ertz. Adding Cooper would follow that plan and give Daniels another top-tier target opposite Terry McLaurin.
While Cooper is off to a lackluster start to the season, that has much more to do with the dumpster fire that is Deshaun Watson, who is sinking the entire team.
Cooper is a proven commodity in the NFL with seven 1,000-yard seasons during his career. He would immediately slot in as the Commanders' No. 2 receiver and give Daniels the upgrade he needs.
The 30-year-old probably wouldn't cost more than a third- or fourth-round pick, so he won't be overly expensive, and while he's in the final year of his $100 million contract, Washington has the funds to extend him if it likes.
If the Commanders are serious about competing this year, adding Cooper makes a ton of sense.
