Could the Washington Commanders have another major surprise in store around the NFL cuts deadline at the wide receiver position after that shocking trade

One look around the NFL’s roster bubble appears to confirm the idea there are opportunities for the Commanders front office to surprise again.

Over at Bleacher Report, Alex Ballentine listed players around the NFL on the roster bubble who could help new teams. That list includes Kansas City Chiefs wideout Kadarius Toney, a former first-round pick:

“Figuring out who Toney could help is difficult. On one hand, he's electric with the ball in his hands and has put together some good games while in the league. On the other, where does someone go when they can't succeed on the Kansas City Chiefs?”

The 20th pick in 2021 by the New York Giants, Toney has been infamous for horrifically mistimed mistakes and drops, to the point of being inactive during the postseason en route to a Super Bowl.

And yet, a change of scenery has helped plenty of other players in the past. After the shocking trade of former first-rounder Jahan Dotson to the Eagles, the Commanders have a mostly unproven wideout depth chart after No. 1 Terry McLaurin. Luke McCaffrey in the slot has been exciting, yet he is a rookie. The tandem of Dyami Brown and Olamide Zaccheaus elsewhere offers upside, yet remains unproven.

So yes, if the Commanders have a chance to add a recently cut former first-round pick who is still just 25 years old, it might make some sense to see if he fits with the new regime in Washington. And really, the Commanders shouldn’t turn the proverbial nose up at anything that could help potential franchise passer Jayden Daniels succeed.
