The Seattle Seahawks got a lot of disappointing performances in last night's home loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Given how poorly the team played for much of the game in all three phases, head coach Mike Macdonald should probably get the lion's share of the blame for this one. He had plenty of help, though. Among the worst performers was veteran quarterback Geno Smith, who had what was one of his worst games since taking over as the team's starter for Russell Wilson in 2022 and definitely his worst outing this year.
Here's a portion of what Smith said about his team's play as well as his own, according to Bob Condotta at the Seattle Times.
Geno Smith on Seahawks-49ers game
"Yeah, we obviously did a lot of things that you don't want to do when you talk about winning football games. We didn't control the ball. We didn't control the clock. We turned the ball over. We had penalties. All the things we talk about every week. Like I said, when we play against good teams, well-coached teams, you can't shoot yourself in the foot. And those are the things that we're doing right now to be totally honest with you. We're just getting in our way and we've got to stop doing that... For me, man - get back to work. Get back to doing the things I'm used to and playing clean football, good football, making the right plays and doing what's right."
Seattle committed three turnovers in the game, one a fumble by Laviska Shenault that was redeemed by his electrifying 97-yard kickoff return touchdown. The other two were interceptions thrown by Geno Smith.
The first pick was a bad decision and overthrow to Tyler Lockett as pressure was bearing down on Smith in the pocket. The second was in the fourth quarter at a crucial moment. It appeared Smith expected DK Metcalf to continue crossing the field, but when Metcalf broke high it was too late and Smith's pass was picked off. When asked about the second pick, Smith seemed annoyed by the question but also admitted it was a "bad play by me."
Smith probably deserves some grace, considering this was his first truly bad game of the season. He threw really well under dire circumstances against a very tough Detroit Lions defense, and he gave Seattle a chance to send to the game to overtime against the New York Giants with two strong fourth quarter drives.
Still, Smith's numbers on the year don't look so great right now. He's currently leading the league in pass attempts, yards and yards per game. However, Smith is also leading the NFL in interceptions with six on the season and his passer rating is 87.0, his lowest since 2017.
