The Seahawks are sticking with Geno Smith as their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. They did have to make a change to their backup situation, though. Seattle reportedly wanted to bring back Drew Lock for another year, but he wound up signing a better one-year deal with the Giants and may even wind up pushing Daniel Jones for serious snaps.

It worked out well for Seattle though, because they were able to trade for a younger, cheaper and more promising version of Lock and it only cost them the equivalent of a seventh-round pick. That's what they gave up for Sam Howell, who pushed the Seahawks to the limit when he visited Lumen Field with a dismal Commanders team last season. While he ended up losing, Howell apparently impressed general manager John Schneider enough to land himself another job.

There's a lot more to it but if nothing else Howell has sufficient arm talent to make it in the NFL. Watch Howell airing it out in this offseason workout video.

The key for Howell will be cutting down on his turnovers, as last year he wound up throwing as many interceptions as touchdowns. For his part, Howell has vowed that he will play smarter football when he gets his next chance.

He won't have to wait too much longer for that opportunity to come. While we will see some of third-stringer P.J. Walker, Howell should get the majority of the Seahawks' snaps at QB this preseason. They play their first game against Jim Harbaugh's Chargers on Saturday, August 10.
