Former Seattle Seahawks great Michael Bennett was a guest on Good Morning Football Today on NFL Network.

While the hosts naturally asked him for his take on the 2024 Seattle Seahawks (we already know that they're really, really good), we were more interested to hear Bennett's take on a different kind of matchup. The regulars on GMFB also asked Bennett who would win in a hypothetical fight between the X-Men and the Avengers. Bennett needed no time at all to answer that the X-Men would win, seemingly based on the depth of their talents, among them the sheer unkillability of Wolverine. Watch.

Bennett has it right. Our analysis is that although the Avengers have some heavy hitters, they just don't have the right kind of personnel to match up with the psychic powers of Professor X and Jean Grey (to say nothing of her villain alter-ego). Doctor Strange is the closest thing the Avengers have for now, but he'd be quickly overpowered going up alone against Xavier and Grey in this department. That dynamic could change if you include the Scarlett Witch as a member of the Avengers, but that doesn't seem practical at this point in the MCU timeline. We're also taking the X-Men at -4.5.

...Anyway!

These days Bennett is working as a designer, as well as moonlighting as a Seahawks preseason analyst. The closest thing today's team has to a Michael Bennett (at least on the field) is rookie defensive lineman Byron Murphy II, who modeled his game in part on Bennett's as he grew up a Seahawks fan deep in Dallas Cowboys territory.

Through two games Murphy hasn't made a splash in the box score, but he has wowed observers with his leverage and ability to disrupt from multiple positions, among other things. Murphy will eventually have his breakout Phoenix game. It's just a matter of time.
