It’s been four years since Jimmy Garoppolo led the San Francisco 49ers within a quarter of the franchise’s still-elusive sixth Super Bowl championship.
During that glorious season, “Jimmy G” played in all 16 games, leading the 49ers to a 13-3 record. He finished second in the Comeback Player of the Year Voting after completing 329 of 476 pass attempts for 3,978 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He was 21-5 as a starter.
Since then, Garoppolo has been injured, benched, and released just one season after signing a $72.5 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders. He signed with the division-rival Los Angeles Rams to be Matthew Stafford’s backup during the offseason.
Suddenly, Garoppolo could be on the move again.
Tyler Huntley did not play well as a fill-in for injured Miami Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa in their Monday night loss to the Tennessee Titans. That has led to speculation that Miami could turn to Garoppolo as a short-term replacement.
Tagovailoa is on the injured reserve list and will be out through at least Week 7 as he recovers from the third concussion of his career.
National Football League writer Max Dible says, “ If Miami is serious about competing for a playoff berth after Tagovailoa returns…the Dolphins must win” on the road against the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts over the next three weeks.
Dible said that backups Tyler Huntley, Skylar Thompson, and Tim Boyle have proven incapable of leading the Dolphins to victory, “but Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo might be.”
Miami is 1-3 this season, tied with the Patriots for last in the AFC East standings.
Garoppolo is 43-20 in his 11-year career as a starting quarterback. He has thrown for 15,494 yards, with 94 touchdown passes and 51 interceptions.
He was suspended for the first two games of the season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs but is fully eligible to play. He made his season debut two weeks ago against his former team.
