The San Francisco 49ers could add a massive piece to the defense in the not-so-distant future.
San Francisco already has one of the top rosters in football but it has plenty of cap space available and could afford to add another star. One of the best players who could be available is New York Jets star linebacker Haason Reddick.
He was traded by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Jets during the offseason and hasn't reported to the team as he looks for a new contract. Because of this, there has been speculation that he could be traded. Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox proposed the 49ers as a possible landing spot.
"49ers Get: Edge Haason Reddick," Knox said. "Jets Get: (defensive end) Yetur Gross-Matos, Conditional 2025 Fourth-Round Pick. The San Francisco 49ers added Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos this offseason to help complement pass-rusher Nick Bosa. However, Gross-Matos suffered a knee injury in San Francisco's preseason finale and has yet to make his 49ers debut. Gross-Matos did return to practice on Thursday.
"While Gross-Matos can be an effective edge-rusher—he had 4.5 sacks and 11 quarterback pressures last season—Reddick would provide San Francisco with an upgrade. And while few teams will be eager to help out the 49ers this season, sending Reddick to San Francisco would at least get him out of the conference. In this hypothetical scenario, the 49ers swap Gross-Matos for Reddick while sending the Jets a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick. That selection could become a third-round pick—the 49ers have two of them, one compensatory—if, say, Reddick reaches 10 sacks and helps San Francisco reach the NFC title game."
If the 49ers somehow could land Reddick, they immediately would be considered the top contender in the NFC.
