On Monday, the San Francisco 49ers added injury to insult following their heartbreaking 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
During his weekly conference call, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that defensive tackle Javon Hargrave suffered a partially torn triceps on Sunday. He is likely out for the rest of the season.
“It’s a big one,” Shanahan said on the impact of Hargrave’s injury. “I thought he had his best game yesterday. I thought he was a huge factor, really affected the quarterback in that game. It’s a big loss…He was definitely going in the right direction and was going to have a big year.”
Hargrave had three tackles and his first sack this season against the Rams. He led all defensive tackles in total pressures (5) in Week 3, with Myles Garrett as the only defensive lineman with a higher pressure rate.
Shanahan said there’s a chance Hargrave could return, but the 49ers would have to make a deep playoff run for that to happen.
The 49ers may shop for replacements, but Shanahan will likely first look at the practice squad for a fill-in while Hargrave recovers. Defensive tackles T.Y. McGill and Evan Anderson are candidates for promotion, as is defensive end Sam Okuayinonu.
Hargrave, 31, is in the second year of a four-year, $84 million contract. He was selected to the Pro Bowl following last season when he recorded 44 tackles and seven sacks in 16 games.
In more positive news, defensive lineman Kalia Davis is getting closer to returning from knee surgery. Shanahan said he’s unlikely to return for Week 4, but it could be soon.
