As the San Francisco 49ers pursue an elusive Super Bowl ring in the Kyle Shanahan era, they seem likely to be opportunistic about adding players at this season's trade deadline.
The 49ers made big splashes at the deadline in both 2022 (Christian McCaffrey) and 2023 (Chase Young). This San Francisco team is all-in, and with quarterback Brock Purdy set for a massive extension next year, 2024 is the time to add veterans without worrying about cap implications.
One area the 49ers could stand to strengthen is linebacker, where do-everything superstar Fred Warner doesn't have the support he's used to thanks to injuries around him. De'Vondre Campbell has been solid in the weakside role, but there's room for a potential upgrade.
Meanwhile, one former Super Bowl champion seems to have no place on the Philadelphia Eagles' defense, despite a decorated track record. Devin White, who has yet to play in a game for the Eagles this season, was named to the Bleacher Report "trade block big board" by Kristopher Knox on Wednesday.
"The Philadelphia Eagles signed linebacker Devin White to a one-year, $4 million contract this offseason, but they have yet to make him active for a game," Knox said.
"After sitting for the first month of his 2024 campaign, the 26-year-old may not be ready to jump right back into a starting role. That said, White is a former Pro Bowler (and a second-team All-Pro in 2020) with 75 starts, 23 sacks and six forced fumbles on his resume."
It's shocking to see White relegated to being a healthy scratch in 2024, because just three years ago, he was considered one of the top linebackers in the game. He took home a Super Bowl ring, a Pro Bowl appearance, and an All-Pro honor all before turning 24.
But the past two years have been difficult, as White suffered an ankle injury that kept him off the field for Tampa Bay for a few weeks, then unsuccessfully requested a trade. Now, his new team, whom he signed with in free agency, hasn't even let him see the field in 2024.
The 49ers could stand to benefit in a huge way if White can bounce back to his previous career norm. And how much could he realistically cost them in return, considering Philadelphia doesn't seem to have a spot for him on the field?
